Letter from the Executive Director-Betsy Durant

For many of you, this is my first opportunity to reach out and introduce myself.  My name is Betsy Durant, and in early September I was hired as the new Executive Director of the Children’s Literacy Network.  I am incredibly humbled and honored to have the opportunity to lead this organization and build on the tremendous foundation laid by prior Executive Directors. There is no doubt that this is an exciting moment for CLN as we begin a new chapter in our story, and advance CLN’s mission to give all children in Washtenaw County an equal opportunity to develop a love of reading and books.

A little about me, I am a seasoned leader in the nonprofit sector with over 20 years dedicated to the realm of Early Childhood Literacy. I have had the opportunity to work for leading organizations in the nonprofit community; The United Way, Great Start to Quality, and the YMCA. I have a passion and a long history of working with children and families. My experience includes working to settle Burmese refugees in Grand Rapids, developing sustainability and life-building skills, teaching community-based resource management, expertise with the Self-Sufficiency Matrix, and working as a preschool teacher, director, and kindergarten interventionist.

I look forward to building upon CLN’s programs as well as initiating others and overall expanding the capacity of the organization to advance its mission and vision. Because it’s not enough to learn how to read, we need to understand the power of books. CLN’s mission is to instill a lifelong love of reading in all children and give them equal access to books. At CLN we know how reading just 20 minutes a day can elevate a child’s literacy skills and put them on a path to success both in and out of the classroom. Simply put, the importance of books in children’s lives can never be overstated.

I’m immensely grateful to people like you, whose engagement and support make this work possible. I sincerely welcome you along for what will be a very engaging and fulfilling ride.

Please stop in and say Hi, I’d love to meet you.
