The Stories That Shape Us

I was in the 11th grade when I “had” to read this book. It wasn’t until I had to sit and think about a book that changed my life that I realized it would be this one. Reading in general is an escape, I enjoy books that make me cry and I enjoy books that allow me to live in an alternate universe. The Great Gatsby does just that and it gave me a love for the 1920’s so much so my bachelorette party was inspired by it.

ON: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

When I transitioned my career from being a full-time musician to attending law school my father gifted me a copy of this book, with the inscription: "Don't forget what it's all for, and don't stop looking for beauty everywhere you go." I never did stop looking for beauty, and I return to these poems -- especially Neruda's "Poetry", Angelou's "Rise", and Tu Fu's "Moonlit Night".

[This book] rocked my world. Yes, there is a land where Whangdoodles, who grow a different set of soft bedroom slippers each year, live. However, only those with an imagination strong enough can travel to this magical land.

I adored this sweet fantasy book. It taught me that imagination and creativity are as important to human understanding as rigorous scientific thinking. Plus, now I know it's best to avoid the Oily Prock and Sidewinders at all costs, and to listen to a Wiffle Bird.

I bought this book years ago on a whim wondering if I could ever grow my own cut flowers. Not only did it have such a wealth of information, but it was so encouraging and inspiring. It led me to a new passion for sustainable growing and floristry. It literally and figuratively helped me grow!

This book is a great tool to help control your mindset by leading change from the inside out. It helps me to ensure I spread positivity personally and professionally. Being a leader, you are required to ensure you guide others in directions that not only serve them with impact, but that also my organization to ensure success. This book helps me stay aligned and gives reminders and tools to me be intentional intentions, mood, and stress levels.

ON: How to be a Coffee Bean by Jon Gordan and Damon West

Reading [this book] was especially inspiring because it's a reminder of how powerful learning can be in changing the course of a person's life. It offered a meaningful reflection on the impact a teacher can have by encouraging curiosity and the belief that every student has the ability to grow beyond what they may have been told is possible.

I don’t remember when I first read this book but it has been a recurring theme in my life and have shared it with both of my kids. It’s an amazing reminder to have courage and embrace change. Through fun rhyming and silly words Dr. Seuss tells you that growth and success may not be a linear trajectory up - but there are bumps along the way and you can overcome them - and be stronger on the other side!

[This book] influenced who I am and how I work. It gave me permission to embrace what makes me different and to bring energy, passion, and authenticity to everything I do. Godin's message that our greatest value comes from creating connection, trust, and meaningful experiences challenged me to focus less on fitting in and more on making a uniquely human contribution that cannot be replaced by a process, script, or machine.

I have never read [this book] myself. I fell in love with my partner on a 6-mile-long walk throughout which he told me in great depth about this book and its series.
